Strange, I was expecting him to enjoy toying with his heir.

Puppies are more fun when they are house-trained. And he is not likely to be taken in by puppy-dog eyes on their own.

Not sure if it is a typo or phraseology issue, or simply me missing the point, but the intent of the dialogue in the final panel is … vague. The sense of reluctant compliance is there. Plus the visuals carry even more subtext. So the strip is still interesting from character development purposes.

However contrast that to the “greasy smear” gag a few strips back, where the intent leaps out and had me laughing away.

Mind you, it would not be the first time that I have a delayed realisation. But felt that a bit of feedback might be constructive regardless. Even if I do have a light-bulb moment shortly after posting the comment.

It’s Xyziax reminding Buzzard who’s the boss, since he looked like he was about to argue against his Overlord’s wishes. 🙂

Gotcha. Which makes me pinpoint what seemed off.

The “You Sire” makes sense if he were responding to “Who is the Overlord, Buzzard?” Ie a question and a reply.

Whereas, with the stress on “OVERLORD Buzzard?”, it came across more as a sarcastic comment. To which the reply would be more appropriate as “Yes Sire” or even a simple “Sire”, to acknowledge the rebuke.

Even if said in a quizzical tone (which I should have picked up from your question mark), such would be an appropriate response to an (implied) rhetorical question.

Sorry, I see a lot of quibbling about points like these on other webcomics, and usually keep out of them. Especially given you email out your strip, so it is a moot point, as the audience have all seen it already. And would not be worth changing, as it is entirely possible I am in a minority position in interpreting it the way I did.

But, it does explain why I was unsure. Which then set me to examining the end of the drowned out sentence, to see if that might have influenced the dialogue, but could not guess anything obvious from that.

Gah. Wall of text. But subtle problems can be the hardest to describe succinctly.

No worries, it’s all good feedback! And yeah, the “Overlord, Buzzard?” is meant as a rhetorical “Who’s the Overlord here?” question to remind Buzzard of his place, shortened because that and a warning glare is sufficient to get Buzzard to (unhappily) submit and stop arguing.

Heh. Actually “Yes sire” is probably a BAD answer to that. Which could result in crispy pile of ashes. “Sorry sire” would run far less risk. But he may not want to say that in front of the apprentice.
