Why is he getting paid in rotten meat?

The magical contract of enslavement (the ‘thrall-pact’) compels the thralls to bring gold or “goods of equivalent value”. The angry customer assumed that the ‘goods’ would be treasure, but the thrall-pact doesn’t actually specify. Offal has value (to some people), enough offal has the same value as a bag of gold.

They should count themselves lucky, at least offal is bio-degradeable. They could have found the thralls bringing left-handed fingerless rubber gloves, or plastic bottle-tops 🙂

That would be FAR more preferable to bio-degradable tissue actually.

Those squid-faced jerks got what they deserved.
